When it comes to jersey sales, baseball jerseys fall far short of football jerseys. While a Derek Jeter jersey sells a couple hundred thousand, a Tony Romo Jersey sells millions of units. One of the best ways for an elite player to show up on the list of jersey sales is to be traded or sign as a free agent. Consider in Football, Brett Favre jerseys were among the best selling for the past 2 seasons since he played one with the Jets and this past season with the Vikings. It didn't hurt that he played one of his best season with the Vikings but a new team, along with success, will mean a big sales spike.
Another factor to consider when comparing different sports and athletic apparel, baseball fans typically show their team colors by purchasing baseball caps. It is funny or ironic that when a football fan buys their team's logo on a "hat", it is still called a baseball cap but that is a whole different irony of life that I typically find humor in. Unless it is at a tailgate party or for an autographed helmet, football fans don't typically purchase them because they aren't practical to wear or use.
What are the factors that go into being a top 10 selling baseball jersey? The first factor seems to be to play for the Yankees since Jeter jerseys and ARod Jerseys are the top 2 in baseball. Clearly big city players are also helped by enormous numbers of fans that follow the teams since you need to drop out of the top 10 baseball jersey sales to find a smaller market player, Ichiro, but Ichiro Jerseys represent an entire nation, not just the Seattle Mariners. While two Chicago Cubs (Derek Lee Jerseys & Alfonso Soriano Jerseys) are in the top 10, being a winner helps since 5 of the top 10 best selling baseball jerseys are players from the World Series Teams. Here is the list of the top selling baseball jerseys in 2009 according to Major League Baseball:
1.Derek Jeter Jersey
2.Alex Rodriguez Jersey
3.Albert Pujols Jersey
4.Derrek Lee Jersey
5.Dustin Pedroia Jersey
6.Manny Ramirez Jersey
7.Ryan Howard Jersey
8.Alfonso Soriano Jersey
9.Chase Utley Jersey
10.Tim Lincecum Jersey
11.Mark Teixeira Jersey
12,monster beats.Ichiro Suzuki Jersey

14.Joe Mauer Jersey
15.Prince Fielder Jersey
In 2010, who will the best selling baseball jerseys be? One interesting detail is that most of the biggest name players who have changed teams have been pitchers so maybe the best selling baseball jersey list will have a pitcher higher than Tim Lincecum jerseys that came in at #10 last season. Who am I referring to? I'm thinking about a Roy Halladay jersey, Jake Peavy jersey (something Obama could make popular), John Lackey Jersey in Boston, and possibly Cliff Lee jersey would be big sellers but moving to small market Seattle won't help Lee. I also think that a rookie could make a splash if Stephen Strasburg makes the Washington Nationals team. I would predict a Strasburg jersey to be an incredibly hot selling since the kid consistently throws over 100 mph and has an incredible slider. In terms of position players, I would expect Pujols jersey to be best selling as I expect another MVP type season. The Chicago White Sox have Gordon Beckham on the team and his big market could mean a Beckham jersey on the backs of White Sox fans. In NY, Curtis Granderson jersey probably means a possible trip to the top 10 in baseball jersey sales as he is an under-appreciated talent. Grab a hotdog and a cold beer this summer as we hopefully enjoy another good baseball jersey season!
